Sunland Village East provides a lifestyle where residents can try new things, connect with others and just have fun.  We have over 45 clubs and groups; and if that isn’t enough, you can start your own!  Below is a list of clubs currently available to SVE residents.  If you want to know more about a listed Club, please contact the individual listed next to it who will be happy to meet you and to tell you more.

ARTS & CRAFTS and HOBBIES
  • Art Club/Classes- $10 a year for membership. They provide a variety of classes taught by a professional instructor. Beginner to Intermediate Watercolor class meets every Monday 9:00 AM – 11:30 AM in the Arts and Craft room. Advanced Watercolor class meets every Monday 1:00 PM – 3:30 PM in the Arts and Craft room. Pan Pastel class meets at 9 AM every Thursday in the Arts and Craft room. Drawing class meets at 1 PM every Friday September-December in the Arts and Craft room.   • Ceramic Club – There is a monitor in the room on Mondays from 9 AM to 11 AM, Wednesday from 1PM – 3PM and Friday from 9AM to 12PM October thru March.   • SVE Knit & Crochet Club– Meets every Monday in the Rosewood room 9:00-11:00 AM and Thursdays at 1:00- 3:00 PM. For more information contact Carol Engelsman, 248-343-0176.
  • Lapidary and Silversmith Club – Located in the North complex, our current hours are Monday 8:30 AM- 11:30 AM and Thursday 1-3 PM. Fall hours will be Monday – Friday 8:30 to 11:30 A.M. and 1:00 to 3:00 P.M.  Newcomers are always welcome.  No experience needed.  Learn to make your own jewelry. Looking for a perfect gift, check out items for sale in our windows. Due to the close quarters of the room, if you are unvaccinated, a mask is required.   • Painting (Open) – Wednesday mornings from 9:30 AM – 11:30 AM in the Arts & Crafts room. Bring your supplies and project to work on. For more information contact Cris Barnes at 520-233-3855. 
  • Stained Glass – Meets in the Arts & Crafts room Nov through April. Hours are Tuesdays at 9 AM-12pm; Wednesdays at 1 PM-4pm; & Friday 12:30 – 3:30 PM in the Art & Crafts room. For more information contact Leo Stewart at 605-580-0330.
  • Sunland Stitchers Club– Meets Monday thru Friday 9am – 4pm in the Oakwood Room.  Business meetings are the 1st and 3rd Mondays of each month October thru March.  We offer classes monthly October thru March.  We are also open all summer.   • SVE Woodshop Club– The Woodshop hours by Month. Jan, Feb, March  Monday – Friday 8am to 4pm; April Monday-Friday 8am to noon; May, June, July, Aug, Sept Monday-Wednesday-Friday 8am to noon; October Monday – Friday 8am to noon; November, December  Monday – Friday 8am to 4pm. The Woodshop also meets the first Tuesday of the Month, in the Saguaro Room 10:30 AM to 12:00 noon  (Oct – Apr). There are no meetings held in the Summer. If for some reason monitor’s are not available during the summer months, the woodshop will be closed. Due to Covid, the protocol being utilized is the standard 6’ social distancing, hand sanitizing, mandatory sign-in and wearing of a mask for non-vaccinated residents.  Mask for vaccinated residents are currently not required, but encouraged.  If you are ill, running a temperature or feel bad, please stay at home to take care of yourself and protect others.   • Bridge, Social Club- Social Bridge meets Tuesdays at 12:45 pm in the Small Card room, Wednesdays (Seasonal) at 1pm in the Ocotillo room, and Fridays at 1pm in the Ocotillo room.   • MahJong, International Club-Meets every Monday 9 – 12 noon in the Ocotillo room. It differs from Mahjong in that you don’t follow a card. We meet Mid November through April. Experience is not required; beginners are welcome and will be taught.   • Mexican Train Club-Meets every Thursday from 1pm-3:15pm  in the Small Card room. They start promptly at 1pm, so please arrive by 12:45pm to get checked in.   • Pass the Trash- Meets every Saturday, except for the second Saturday of the month. They meet year round in the Mesa Verde Room.   • Poker Mixed Dealers Choice-Meets every Monday at 1 – 4:30 PM and Friday at 6 – 9:30 PM in the Poker room. Doors open 30 minutes before. For more information contact Robert Chaplinski at 480-986-0442.

  • Ponytail- We have two different meeting times for Ponytail.

EXERCISE & DANCE
  • Line Dancing- Classes are Mondays 2:30-3:30pm in the Auditorium and 4:30pm in the Mesa Verde room.  For more information contact Susan Tuttle at 602-329-2213.
  • North Pool Aerobic Exercises for Arthritis Club- Meets Monday through Friday. The north pool offers a 9 AM class of stretching and aerobic water exercises for arthritis.   • South Pool Water Aerobics Club – Meets Monday through Friday. The south pool offers a 7:30 AM medium impact water aerobics, contact Monica Hall for more info at 480-984-5378 and a 9 AM low impact water aerobics, contact  JoShuck for more info at 307-629-2541. The south pool has also added in a medium to high impact water aerobics to “Music” that meets Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday from 6:15am to 7:15am , for more information contact Ilona Porter at 406-698-4024.
  • Square Dancing – Meetings will resume December 2023. There are 4 different days/times that offer different levels of challenge (C stands for Challenge Level Square Dancing). Meets Sunday evening 7-9 PM in the Mesa Verde Room (C1 Dance), Monday morning 9-11 AM in the Oakwood Room (C3A), Tuesday Morning 9:30 -11:30 AM in the Mesa Verde Room (C3B), and Wednesday evening 7-9 PM in the Oakwood Room (C2 Dance).   • SVE Stretch Club (formerly gentle stretch) – Meets every Saturday from 7:30 – 8:30 am in the Mesa Verde Room. It is $4 pp. Start your day with a gentle stretch and improve full body flexibility.   • Sunsationals Tap Dance Club – Meets 9-11:30 AM in the Auditorium on the 2nd and 4th Tuesday of the month through the summer. Starting in November they will meet 9:00-11:00 AM in the Auditorium every Tuesday and Friday. Tuesday is a tap class taught by an experienced professional. Every Friday we meet to practice.   • SVE Golf Course – We have a superbly conditioned 18 Hole Executive Length Course and driving range with 9 hole play available as well. Enjoyable for all ages and abilities. OTHER ACTIVITIES
  •  Active Singles Club- Meets every Wednesday in the Mesa Verde room. Doors open at 6 PM and the meeting begins at 6:30 PM, with games to follow. The evening ends at approximately 8:30 PM. For more information contact Martha Gardner at 480-968-2579.
  • Alzheimer’s Caregivers Support Group – Meets the 3rd Thursday of the month in the Saguaro room at 1 PM. The group is led by a representative from the Alzheimer’s Association. For more information contact Jan Vineyard at 480-373-5859.
  • Bingo – Bingo is now playing every Sunday except Easter in the SVE Auditorium. Doors open at 4pm and Bingo starts at 6pm. No person under the age of 18 may purchase packets, play games, or claim prizes. Prize money will vary during the year based on attendance. Sunland Village East Bingo is played in accordance with the Arizona State Revenue rules and regulations, which are available on the premises along with the prominent display of the SVE Bingo license.   •  SVE Computer Club – Our regular meetings are Mondays at 9:00 AM in the Mesa Verde Room. Check out our new interactive website at SVECC.com.  Through this site you can join the club ($20.00 annual fee), and receive meeting and informational notices throughout the year for Windows, Mac’s, Linux, and Photography. We will be having both in person meetings (September to May) and Zoom meetings (through the year) for General Membership and All SIGS (special interest groups). Access to the site requires membership and sign up and payment is done on line. Membership is for 1 year from date of signup and you can sign up at any time. Membership will give you access to the Website, a Monthly newsletter, and automatic membership in the Windows, Mac, Linux and Photography SIGS. Our In-person and zoom meetings include Question and Answer periods and presentations by National Computer groups, and local government officials, library, police, etc. In addition, the club will continue to offer Fix-it Tuesday’s to all residents of SVE and Internet access in the area around the Training Facility at the North complex.     • Computer Club Fix-It Tuesdays – Fix-It Tuesday is held on many Tuesdays in the Computer Lab (located at the North Complex) from 1 pm – 3 pm. This is open to ALL Sunland Village East residents. Please bring your laptop or the tower from your desktop to the computer lab. The fee is $20.If you are unable to bring your computer to the Computer Lab on Tuesday, you may call to set up an appointment for an in-home visit. Joe Zagar is available between 9 am – 3 pm, Monday through Friday at (602) 885-9666. Katie Gertz is available at (480) 330-2547. There is a nomial fee for an in-home visit.
    • Computer Club, MAC Group – We are a SIG (Special Interest Group) which is a part of the SVE Computer Club. We are known as MACies. We are sanctioned by Apple as a user group to operate as the MACies.  Katie Gertz has been leading this group since 2011. We meet twice a month on the 2nd and 4th Mondays from 1-3pm, in the Mesa Verde Room.  For the 2023/2024 season from Oct-April, we will have HYBRID meetings which means we will have people attend in-person at the Mesa Verde room and use ZOOM (May through September only) for those who are unable to attend in person.  As our name implies, we talk about products made by APPLE, i.e. iPads, iPhones, etc.  For more information and to get on her mailing list, contact Katie Gertz, 480-330-2547.

    • Computer Club, Digital Photo Group –  The club meets the 1st and 3rd Mondays from 1-3 pm in the Computer Lab on the courtyard. If you would like to join the photo club please contact Mark Thurn at 701-226-9582 or email him at mthurn@bektel.com to be added to the club’s email list.   • Bible Friendship Circle Club – Beginning the second Wednesday of November in the Mesa Verde Room at 9:30am, we study the bible using a study guide to help us. Open discussion is encouraged to understand the word of God better. Prayer is always included as we pray for each other’s needs. We make time for new relationships with extra activities , ladies bring their own drinks and we provide a treat to go with it.   • SVE Genealogy Club– Curious about your ancestry? Want to know what secrets or exciting adventures lie in your family history? Come join our group of others who are interested in finding out. We welcome anyone whether you are new to family history research or experienced. We learn from and help each other.   • Healthy Living Club – Meets every Monday 2pm to 3 pm in the Rosewood room. We meet all year long. There is no cost to attend. We discuss how to thrive in life verses just surviving.   •  SVE Veterans Club –The Club promotes patriotism, honors veterans and family members, creates educational opportunities, and supports those in need anytime. ANYONE CAN JOIN! Our club meetings run October-April on the 3rd Wednesday of each month in the auditorium and we host a few special events throughout the year. The monthly “Vets Talk” meetings are open to Veterans only and runs year round on the 2nd Friday of each month in the Saguaro Room. The club has thirteen active committees that run ongoing programs and services for the Community. We produce a quarterly newsletter that allows us to get advanced information out to our members. The newsletters and club forms are always available as well as a secure drop box at 8341 E. Monterey Avenue. Our leadership goal is to ensure our members are informed and included in all we do!   • Village Chapel – Chapel services are held in the Auditorium, services start at 9:00 AM. There will be congregational singing. A Fellowship, with coffee and donuts, begins immediately after the worship service. The Village Chapel is a non-denominational ministry that exists to serve SVE residents and non-residents in the surrounding community. Since 1990, the chapel has been providing weekly worship services, seasonal Bible Studies and daily prayer and support for the ill and those grieving the loss of loved ones.   • Village Chapel Choir – Meets every Thursday in the Mesa Verde room from 1 – 3 PM. Begins meeting 9/22 and continues through May. For more information, please contact Ilona Porter 406-698-4024
  • Village Singers Club –Meets every Tuesday at 1 PM for rehearsals from January through March in the Mesa Verde room. Our director is Ilona Porter who has extensive experience directing singing groups. She works well with individuals who have a lot of experience with singing as well as those who have never been trained and have never done singing with groups. The climax of our season is a concert we do towards the end of March. The group also does appearances for other clubs to lead a special gatherings in singing the national anthem or similar requests.   • Women’s Bible Study Club- Ready to be renewed and refreshed in 2023 while fellowshipping alongside women of all ages and stages of life? We will grow together spiritually and have fun as we study God’s Word. We will be studying the book of Revelation using a study guide by Steve Witmer (available to order on Amazon).   • Women’s Frame Drum Class- FREE & FUN! NO registration needed. Frame drums are provided. NO musical background or experience required. Meets on the 2nd and 4th Wednesdays of October through April, in the Rosewood Room. *There may be a change in the schedule in November and December due to the holidays.   Contact Susy Manning for questions- 480-862-3306.  HealthRHYTHMS facilitator- It’s about Expression, NOT Experience.
    • SO, what IS a frame drum? Visualize vertically holding a round cake pan on your lap (bottom of the pan is away from you). Any size. You can even learn on a pizza box/pan, a yoga block, pretty much anything! The Frame drum is one of the most ancient musical instruments and perhaps the first drum to be invented. We will be using the techniques of world-renowned Marla Leigh. You can check her out on Youtube.   
    • If you want to just come a few times and try it out, GREAT! There is no judgement, only acceptance. Be part of an ongoing, stress-free environment and welcoming group of women. We are all learning at our own pace, meeting our personal needs for experiencing relaxation, meditation, and intention setting. Then we can use what we have learned to relax and unwind at home.

  • Bocce Club– Courts are open 9 AM – 9 PM. Practice balls are in the closet just north of the courts and game rules are posted at the court.   • Horseshoes Club- Hours are Monday – Sunday, 7 AM – 4 PM. Maintain social distancing, wear a face mask and wash hands often (or use hand sanitizer). For more information contact Steve Farnsworth at 480-688-5134.
  • Pickleball Club- Pickleball courts are open to all residents and guests as long as guests are accompanied by a resident. All residents will need a fob to enter the new courts and security unlocks the Sport Courts at 6:00 a.m. If you don’t have a paddle, we have paddles and balls that you can use.   • Ping Pong Club– Come check out Ping-Pong Tuesdays from 3-5pm and Fridays from 10-noon in the Rosewood room. If you are interested in being a host, please contact Susan at 480-907-5669. Bring your own paddle or the Association has a limited number of paddles residents can use.
  • SVE Shuffleboard Club– Shuffleboard is a fun and active game; new players are always welcome. Organized play with available training is Monday, Wednesday and Saturdays at 9:30 AM (October through May). All equipment is provided. Courts are available to play individually Monday through Sunday 9 AM to 9 PM. Guests must have their SVE resident in attendance with them when utilizing our courts. Rules are posted at the courts Please only use the wax that is in the “shake” containers when you come to play. When finished, clean the courts thoroughly by sweeping all wax up and put in garbage cans. Any wax left on the courts is a safety hazard.   • Softball Club – SVE Softball league will begin in January. Batting practice will begin on Tuesday, March 15th and will be held every Tuesday and Thursday at 8:00 a.m., with scrimmage to follow.   • Trailblazers Hiking Club – Meetings will resume Fall 2023. Hikers meet in the parking lot north of the courtyard. Riders compensate drivers. All hikers carpooling with the hiking group are required to sign a waiver and carry at least 1.5 liters of water. Food and sturdy footwear are recommended.   • SVE Water Volleyball (north pool) – Winter hours are Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 2 PM – 4 PM. Starting Monday, June 5, 2023, summer play hours will be from 7:00pm-9:00pm Monday, Wednesday, Friday. Maintain social distancing, wash hands often (or use hand sanitizer).
